||Personality:
Kotarou has this stoic look that makes him look intimidating. He's silent and does not talk much and tends to stare at people curiously while others might mistake him for glaring. Despite this though, he's actually a coward and is socially awkward and is never able to start a conversation. He is often misunderstood for being proud, strong and cold by first glance and his physically strong nature does not help much with the matter. His taciturn behavior and 'murderous glares' makes others feel intimidated but in reality he's the one who is scared of people.

Kotarou loves cleanliness and is especially concerned about the cleanliness of the water he lives in. He dislikes humans who dirty his territory but can never seem to summon enough courage to face them head on and will clean the mess after them quietly in the end.

He is also a softie when it comes to children, but can't seem to get any of them to like him due to his intimidating eyes and inability to communicate normally despite having the appearance. Blessed with the brilliant mind and peaceful nature, he always seeks to befriend humans but it never goes well due to his timidity.
He has a quite severe obsession with tidiness, cleanliness and neatness, which makes him unable to bring himself to eat the shirikodama even though it's supposed to be one of the kappas' favorite.

When it comes to serious fights, he becomes fully focused on combat and anything outside the combat field can be and will be completely ignored.

When he's alone or with one he feels comfortable with, he's calm and caring, but still stays silent most of the time.

"I do believe youkai can befriend humans! Not now...but someday..." _{800 years and not yet}

Kotarou was born as one of the strongest kappa among the children and was to take over as the leader of the kappa in the Kansai area, focusing on Lake Biwa in Shiga and the area around and worshipping Benzaiten, the goddess whom they believed to be residing in the lake. He had shown interest in the humans since his first century of life, witnessing civil wars, watching the humans interact and studying anything and everything he could find out about. Instead though, he missed the chance to interact with anyone else at all and had never actually the chance to practice his theoritical knowledge.

Ignorant of the world outside the books and observation, he naively believed that the youkais and humans should co-exist. His way of thinking would have been viewed as naive and unfit for someone who was going to rule over the water flows in the whole Kansai region, but he got away with it at first, with his natural fierce looks.
He had been thought as the cold and strongest fighter in the tribe, as he had never lost to anyone in a spar, but he never actually wanted to use his full power to attack anybody due to his kind-hearted nature. Due to his social awkwardness, he never spoke much to anybody else.

He lived his early life completing his training and listening to his elders so that he would be capable to take over the leader in the future, not that he exactly wanted to be one. There were still others who aspire to be one, ones with stronger ambitions and views on the world, and more suited to be, in his opinion, but he kept quiet anyway.

It had been peaceful for the first couple centuries of his life, until some of them were ordered to actually cause some mischief while the others would try to challenge the humans. Kotarou was ordered to snatch away the shirikodama from some humans and present them before the elders. Realizing it would mean taking away the humans' lives, he had already hesitated even before his mission started. He tried anyway, but he still couldn't. While he was wasting his time hesitating, the humans noticed him and started accusing him. Not having proper social skills, he couldn't talk back and reflexively, inadvertently hurt a human who attempted to get near him, fueling the anger of the humans around him. He learned the hard way that humans couldn't and wouldn't accept those who were different from them. However, it didn't make him stop believing his stupid ideal, for some reason.

Failing his mission, his tribe started to look down on him and he gradually became an outcast. After a while, he was finally banished, officially becoming a tribeless kappa. The news of the supposedly potential leader failing an important mission then banished from the tribe quickly spread across Kansai, and he was no longer accepted as one of them. Seeing this, even if he didn't want to leave too far, he had to get out of the area.

On his last night at the lake, when he was beginning to regret his decision to fail the mission and was about to actually throw away his ideal of humans and youkai getting along, the goddess Benzaiten appeared silently in front of him. The kappa was speechless, but somehow convinced that the deity supported his way of thinking, granting him the ability to transform into what resembles a human and a scarf to guarantee his safety in his human form, at the price of having weaker spiritual powers, which meant having a more sensitive senses towards cleanliness and a shorter lifespan. He didn't mind making the deal, and was bestowed the duty to actually try and form a friendly relationship with those other than his kin, including humans.

He swam through the river and left the place that was once his home, heading towards the Kantou region with his new abilities. He arrived in Edo and deciding the lively city would give him a better chance to socialize with others, he settled in the lake right outside the town, prefering a calmer residence to live in.



||Relationship:
=Makoto is his first friend. The cat was cute, and he likes to brush his hair and fur. Kotarou kind of admires his cheerful nature, and does not understand why others wouldn't like him.
